S1E3: Meeting New Friends and Old Enemies - Stardate 32030.1

Opening Log - Captain Tallmadge

Ahead of this morning's meeting, I have given considerable thought to who should become the new First Officer of the Rutherford. Next in line would be Doctor Tolanna, but her duties as Chief Medical Officer would typically preclude her from the position.

Then we have Commander Khorv. He is a fine officer but rarely steps outside his comfort zone. He is diligent and competent in ship operations but I don't see a desire to grow out of that position.

Opposite of that, Lieutenant Commander T'Shel has been exceptional in her duties, and in times of need, far exceeded my expectations. She has provided sound advice and been a reliable sounding board to help work through difficult situations.

I also see that the crew respect her and often follow her suggestions. I believe she is a natural leader, despite her career choice in the Science Division.

I plan to offer her the position after the senior staff briefing at 0800. If she accepts, she'll be reassigned to Command and given the rank of Commander.

As we approach the Zelarian space station I am preparing to make first contact with their leader. It is imperative that we have a successful meeting. We need more information about this galaxy and to obtain supplies if we're going to look for a way home. And it would be great to give the crew something positive out of the situation we find ourselves in. After all, exploring strange new worlds is why many of us signed up for Starfleet.
